Italian immigration continued at a trickle throughout the middle of the 19th century. Although travelers from the peninsula continued to roam the world, most chose to settle in Argentina and Brazil. Between 1820 and 1870, fewer than 25,000 Italian immigrants came to the U.S., mostly from northern Italy. As a typical “immigration nation,” it originally attracted just the Spanish, but in the 19 th century Italian migrants started arriving too. In the years between 1870 and 1930, estimates suggest that 7 million people from mostly Spain and Italy made the move to Argentina. The immigration from nearby countries (Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay) more or continues through the 19 th, 20 th, and 21 st centuries. Italian speakers in Argentina number about 1.5 million, one of the largest concentrations outside of Italy itself. Due to the fact that most arriving immigrants spoke regional dialects of Italian and found it just as easy to communicate in Spanish , Italian never truly became the country’s second language. By assembling new individual-level data following Italian immigrants from passenger lists to population censuses, I am able to observe the year of entry, port of origin, and pre-migration occupation of a sample of Italians who resided in Argentina or the US by the late 19th century. Plus, Argentina already had a large tradition of Italian immigrants, so Buenos Aires was a very easy place for Italians to fit in.

Small groups of Italians started to immigrate to Argentina as early as the second half of the 18th century. However, the stream of Italian immigration to Argentina became a mass phenomenon only from 1880 to 1920, during the Great European immigration wave to Argentina, peaking between 1900–1914, about 2 million settled from 1880 to 1920, and just 1 million from 1900 to 1914.
